Fire Kit

For those who showed an interest, here's a look into my current version of the fire kit that I carry in the wilderness.  I also take it along on day hikes in order to practice with the contents, or in the event I need a fire in an emergency.  It changes from time to time, as I rotate stuff, find a better way to do things, or just get something new to try.

There is an old timey tobacco tin with burning lens, a small shoe polish can with char cloth, a matchsafe, a firebow bearing made from Teflon, and a blow tube given to me by Aboman.

Here's the tobacco tin opened up.
Inside the tin is some jute fiber, a cotton wick with brass tube (to protect the charred wick), a magnesium bar & fero rod in the plastic bag, a Rik Palm flint striker & flint, some fatwood, and in the little red plastic straw, some Vaseline soaked cotton balls.
Here's a close-up of the flint striker...
Here it gets hardened.  Cool pic, huh?  Thanks Rik!
The matchsafe has a compass in the top...  Nice little piece of equipment.  Inside I have some waterproofed Diamond strike anywhere matches, and a hunk of cotton.  The cotton keeps them from rattling around, and it serves as some tinder.
It is a mixture of old and new technology, and it's kinda fun to play around with the contents.  I also always have my SAK Rucksack, which also has a Boy Scout fero rod on it...

Anyway, hope this is interesting...

Bill
